The students enjoy all the science around us. Lately many students have been interested in ants. We talk about their color, size, body parts and of course we count their legs. We use magnifying glasses to observe or sometimes we just pick them and and watch closely as they crawl on our hands.
The butterfly develops through a process called metamorphosis. The life cycle of a butterfly includes first the eggs, next the caterpillars (feeding stage), then the chrysalises (transformation) and finally adult butterflies emerge. We are checking our caterpillars every day. They are eating and growing bigger soon we will have a chrysalis to watch.
Prepositions are important words. We use prepositions more frequently than other individual words. Prepositions teach us location and time. In the classroom we use prepositions while driving our buses under, around, between, beside and outside of furniture. The students love this activity. They are learning to follow directions, learning new words, and moving all at the same time. Prepositions we use frequently in the classroom include across, at, around, before, behind, beside, between, below, in, on, out, under, up, off and outside.
Therapy putty, Silly putty, play-doh are excellent materials for squeezing, squishing, pulling, pushing and molding. The students enjoy pulling the putty to find the hidden stars and pulling them out. This is a excellent activity to build hand strength.
The great thing about young children they are motivated to help. Helping a parent with a simple chore gives children quality individual attention. Taking the time to teach your child a new skill will foster independence, develop language, and hand - eye coordination. Tools children can use at home include scissors, broom, dust pan, rolling pin etc... Chores young children can do at home include making their own bed, emptying trash can, unloading utensils from the dishwasher and wiping up their own mess.
Snack time is a terrific time to let the children learn to do things all by themselves. Before snack we practice washing our hands. At snack time the students make a choice by pointing to or verbally telling an adult which snack they prefer. Snack time is a time to promote good manners and conversations. Once snack is over, the children throw away their own trash and put away their snack mats. Everyone loves snack time! |
